CBCT: Advanced 3D Dental Imaging
CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is an innovative medical imaging technique that provides dentists and dental specialists with detailed three-dimensional views of a patient's jaws, teeth, and surrounding structures. It has enhanced our ability to identify structures that may remain hidden on traditional X-rays such as IOPA and OPG, including dental cracks, unusual tooth anatomy, and abnormalities inside or around a tooth.
How Does A CBCT Scan Work?
Preparation
Before the scan begins, patients are protected by a special apron that covers the torso, front and back.
Positioning
Once the apron is placed, the patient is positioned in the standard position to accurately and precisely capture a 3d image of Jaws, specific teeth and the surrounding structures.
Scanning
The scanner rotates once around the patient to capture a complete 3d image
Image Processing
The image can be viewed using different slices and angles to provide vast amounts of useful and important information.
Analysis
Finally, the radiolodist/ dental specialist carefully reads the 3d image on a computer.
The Dentist may enhance images and measure anatomic landmarks to better assess teeth and other structures. This invaluable resource allows dentists to develop patient-specific treatment plans that will appropriately manage their condition.
CBCT Applications In Dentistry And ENT
CBCT has greatly assisted dentists, dental specialists & ENT specialists in many clinical scenarios. Its ability to provide detailed three-dimensional information can be particularly valuable when conventional 2D X-rays do not provide sufficient information.
It may assist in the assessment and treatment planning of oral and maxillofacial conditions, dental implants, root canal treatment, orthodontics, impacted teeth, dental trauma, Sinus analysis and airway analysis
Dental Implant Planning
Three-dimensional imaging can help evaluate the available bone and the relationship of proposed implant sites to important anatomical structures, supporting implant treatment planning.
Root Canal Treatment
CBCT may be particularly useful in selected complex endodontic cases where detailed information about root anatomy, canals, or surrounding structures is required.
Wisdom Tooth Evaluation
Impacted wisdom teeth can sometimes be positioned close to important anatomical structures. A CBCT scan can provide a detailed 3D view of the tooth and surrounding anatomy, helping the treating dentist or oral surgeon assess the situation before treatment.
Orthodontic Assessment
CBCT may be recommended in selected orthodontic cases when three-dimensional information is required. It can provide additional information about: Tooth position Impacted teeth Jaw structures Airway-related anatomy when clinically indicated Root and bone relationships
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
CBCT can provide detailed information about the jaws, facial bones, teeth, and surrounding structures, supporting assessment and planning for selected surgical cases.
Sinus Analysis
CBCT provides detailed 3D views of the maxillary sinuses and their relationship with the teeth and surrounding bone. It can help assess sinus anatomy, bone availability, mucosal changes, and conditions relevant to implant or surgical planning
Airway Analysis
CBCT provides a three-dimensional view of the upper airway, allowing assessment of airway size, shape, and areas of narrowing. This information can support evaluation and treatment planning for selected sleep-disordered breathing and orthodontic cases.
Nerve Mapping
CBCT provides detailed 3D visualization of important nerve canals and surrounding anatomical structures, helping dentists assess their location and relationship to teeth, implants, and other structures before treatment.
Is CBCT Safe ?
Yes. CBCT uses very low radiation dose. CBCT scan specifically focused on small areas of the mouth, resulting in radiation dosages several hundred times lower than traditional medical CT, even lower than a chest X-ray. We follow ALARA principle and Multiple FOV machine to ensure safe and responsible imaging

Why Choose Gurgaon Dental Imaging
As a team of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists, surgeons, and dentists, we are trained to evaluate diseases and conditions affecting the teeth, facial bones, and maxillofacial region. These areas contain some of the smallest and most complex anatomical structures in the human body. Detailed imaging can help clinicians identify dental infection, pain-related conditions, trauma, and other abnormalities that may be difficult to assess using conventional X-rays alone.
CBCT imaging provides valuable anatomical information that can assist dental professionals in developing patient-specific treatment plans and making informed clinical decisions.
