What Is OPG ?

OPG, or orthopantomogram, is a 2-dimensional panoramic X-ray. This means that your entire mouth can be seen in a single X-ray. You can even compare it to Google Street View. In a single X-ray, all your teeth, roots, nerve position, joints, sinuses- everything- can be seen.
A normal X-ray usually shows only one or two teeth, or a localized area. Whereas with an OPG, we can see everything together.

Why Do Doctors Recommend an OPG

One Complete Big Picture

When we take a small X-ray, we can see only one or two teeth or a localized area. When we get an OPG done, we get a clear picture of the entire mouth. The whole mouth is scanned together.

This allows us to see all your teeth, roots, hidden cavities, bone loss, nerve position, joints, sinuses, everything in a single X-ray.

In dentistry, all problems are connected. Many times, there can be a problem even where there is no pain. So, with an OPG, we can identify all the problems together.

This helps in making an accurate diagnosis and allows us to plan the treatment properly without guesswork.

OPG for Wisdom teeth

Wisdom Tooth Cases

Wisdom teeth, or the third molars, are some of the trickiest cases because, in most cases, the wisdom tooth is stuck inside the bone, comes in at an angle, is very close to the nerve, or may sometimes cause a cavity in the adjacent tooth from underneath.

So, it is very difficult to see all of this clearly with a normal X-ray.

With an OPG, the doctor can clearly see how much the tooth is embedded in the bone, how close it is to the nerve, and plan the procedure accordingly.

This makes the surgery much safer.

That is why, in wisdom tooth cases, an OPG is almost mandatory.

Braces or Aligner Treatment

If you are planning to get braces or aligners, it is very important for your doctor to understand your entire jaw system.

With an OPG, the doctor can clearly see how developed your permanent teeth are, which baby teeth need to be retained, which baby teeth need to be removed, whether there is an extra tooth, whether any tooth is impacted, whether any tooth is missing, and in which direction and to what extent your jaw has developed.

All this accurate information can be obtained through an OPG. Without an OPG, your treatment can potentially go in the wrong direction.

Therefore, getting an OPG before braces planning is an important step.

Early Detection of Hidden Problem

There are many problems that may not be detected during a normal routine dental check-up.

For example:

  • Cysts
  • Tumors
  • Infection in the jawbone
  • Nerve-related issues
  • Periodontal bone loss
  • Sinus issues

These things can sometimes be missed during a routine check-up or with a limited dental X-ray.

Whereas with an OPG, screening of the entire mouth and surrounding structures can be done at once.

This means that even a small problem can potentially be detected early with an OPG.

Zero guesswork.

The doctor can make treatment decisions—whether it is an dental impant, extraction, root canal treatment, braces or aligners—with clear radiographic evidence.

The result?

Better treatment, better results, and better patient safety.
